RUMSON
One of New Jersey ’s most established and affluent communities, Rumson is situated on a peninsula bounded by the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers . With easy access to New York , abundant recreational facilities and an excellent school system, Rumson is a popular destination choice for relocating executives and their families, including the “Boss” Bruce Springsteen.
Legend has it that early settlers bought the piece of land from the Natives for some rum. But as far back as 1663, long before the area was officially named Rumson, Natives called it “Navarumsunk.” Over the years it has been shortened to Rumson.
Rumson has always been a very affluent area. In fact, it is still one of the wealthiest towns in New Jersey . The homes are spectacularly large, many with private yachts anchored in the Navesink River , which serves as their backyard. Locals enjoy the beautiful beaches just over the Oceanic Bridge , as well as a quick commuter ferry to downtown Manhattan .
Although known for its beautiful mansions, properties range from converted turn-of-the-century bungalows to 30-acre estates. The town’s three small business districts feature a wide variety of restaurants and upscale shops. Rumson’s Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club is designated a National Historic Landmark.
The Borough of Rumson offers six magnificent parks (Victory Park, Piping Rock Memorial Park, Rogers Park, West Park, Riverside Park, and Meadow Ridge), a public boat ramp and the historic Bingham Hall Community Center .

Local Government
Rumson is governed by the Borough form of government, with a mayor and a six-member Borough Council. The mayor serves a four-year term. Borough Council members serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year. The borough form of government was created in 1878 and modified by the Borough Act of 1987. There are approximately 218 municipalities using the borough form of government, which is supervised by a mayor and six council members, all of whom are elected at large. There are 37 boroughs in Monmouth County .
