KEYPORT Keyport is known as the “Gateway to the Bayshore.” Situated on an inlet of Raritan Bay, it is named for its key-shaped harbor. Established as Brown’s Point in 1870, Keyport developed into an important shipping center for Monmouth County commerce, especially farm produce. Today, Keyport is known for its strong charter boat industry and extensive harbor facilities and home to Keyport Yacht Club. Local events include annual art and antique shows held at the Public Library. The Steamboat Dock Museum, located in a building previously occupied by the Keansburg Steamboat Company, is dedicated to local history.
Keyport is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural beauty of the Raritan Bayshore Coastline.
Education The Keyport Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are Keyport Central School (grades PreK-7) and Keyport High School (grades 8-12). Keyport is also home to St. Joseph School – pre-school to Grade 8.
Museums The Monmouth Museum was founded in 1963 as "A Museum of Ideas". The purpose of the Monmouth Museum is to promote and support activities, which enhance the understanding and appreciation of cultural, scientific and artistic endeavors. The Museum operates a facility devoted to accessible art exhibitions and educational programs that express original, provocative ideas and concepts relevant to the enhancement in the quality of life of the diverse community it serves in New Jersey.
