HIGHLANDS
Highlands is situated along the cove between Sandy Hook and Raritan Bay . The name "Highlands" stems from the impressive bluffs rising 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean . The borough is one of the highest coastal regions in the Northeastern United States and offers spectacular views of the ocean, the bay and the New York City skyline. Highlands is known as one of the most scenic communities in Monmouth County . In its early years, the community supported a prosperous clamming industry. For a time, overuse and pollution nearly devastated the industry. However, clamming recently began making a successful comeback.
The major industry of Highlands is now tourism. Thousands of visitors come each year to enjoy the beaches and natural preserves as well as to visit the area’s lighthouses and Fort Hancock, a national historic landmark located on Sandy Hook . Highlands is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural beauty of the Raritan Bayshore coastline.
In order to preserve the quality and quantity of the region’s precious resource, as well as the quality of life of the 880,000 people who live in the Highlands , the Governor signed the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act, on August 10, 2004. The Act calls for a fifteen member Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council, five of whom must be municipal officials from the Highlands Region and 3 of whom must be county officials from the Highlands Region. Fourteen members were appointed to the Council in the fall of 2004. The Highlands Council is charged with carrying out the provisions of the Act, including the development of a regional master plan for the Highlands Region. The Council meetings are open to the public.
Highlands' most prominent landmark is the Twin Lights, constructed in 1862 to guide commercial and Navy vessels into Sandy Hook Bay Marina. Highlands is also home to many of the Shore’s famed seafood restaurants.
Education For kindergarten through sixth grade, students attend the Highlands Elementary School. For grades 7-12, students attend Henry Hudson Regional High School, a comprehensive six-year high school and regional public school district that serves students from both Atlantic Highlands and Highlands. The district serves approximately 500 students.
Museums The Monmouth Museum was founded in 1963 as "A Museum of Ideas". After ten years of temporary homes, the Museum moved into its own 12,000 square foot facility in 1973 on the campus of Brookdale Community College, built entirely with donated funds. The purpose of the Monmouth Museum is to promote and support activities, which enhance the understanding and appreciation of cultural, scientific and artistic endeavors. The Museum operates a facility devoted to accessible art exhibitions and educational programs that express original, provocative ideas and concepts relevant to the enhancement in the quality of life of the diverse community it serves in New Jersey.
The Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) collects, preserves, and interprets its extensive museum, library, and archival collections that relate to Monmouth County history and cultural and makes these resources available to the widest possible audience.
MCHA promotes the study and appreciation of regional and national history through educational programming, publications, special exhibits, and research services. MCHA also preserves and interprets five significant historic sites which represents the County’s vanishing architectural heritage.
