Atlantic Highlands, NJ

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS
Originally known as Portland Poynt, Atlantic Highlands is located on the north shore of Sandy Hook. It was part of Middletown until 1887 when it was incorporated as a separate entity.  In the 1880s, the community hosted a renowned Methodist camp meeting site.  In the 1990s, the Central Railroad of Jersey built a 2,400 foot pier that allowed passengers to transfer to steamers for a one-hour ride across Raritan Bay to New York City . Although it is more of a residential and less of a tourist community than many of its neighboring villages, there are more than 700 boats harbored off the shores of Atlantic Highlands.

Today, the Manhattan skyline is seen from its ridges and bayside. The creation of the municipal harbor took place from 1938 through 1940. This harbor was built with municipal, state, and federal funds. It is the largest on the East Coast, home to 715 craft including the SeaStreak high-speed ferry service to New York City which was introduced in 1992.
This upscale historic village, nestled among the rolling hills on the bayshore, is able to provide visitors with all the necessary amenities. Within walking distance of State Route 36 or the large sheltered marina, visitors will find first class restaurants, a 5-plex cinema and live stage theaters, retail, gift, boutique and collectible stores.

Education

Students in public school for kindergarten through sixth grade attend Atlantic Highlands Elementary School. For grades 7-12, public school students attend Henry Hudson Regional High School.

The district serves a total enrollment of 465 students. Many students also atten Ranney School in nearby Tinton Falls, which is a K-12 preparatory school.
